    Upon hearing a tenured professor refer to ChatGPT as a “colleague,” I chuckled. He wasn’t kidding, though. He described how the tool was used to create lecture slides, create course outlines, and even evaluate student work. That was delegation, not collaboration, and it was getting out there.

    What started out as low-stakes experimentation is quickly evolving into standard procedure, frequently without any time for introspection. AI has been enthusiastically embraced at large public institutions such as the California State University system. Every campus will be “AI-empowered” thanks to CSU’s $17 million partnership with OpenAI. Now, ChatGPT Edu would be as easily accessible as a library card.

    Administrators highlighted the advantages: labor optimization, personalized learning, and time savings. However, the timing was especially telling. CSU announced significant budget cuts along with this AI expansion. Programs like gender studies, anthropology, and philosophy were cut. The jobs of hundreds of faculty members were in jeopardy. Chatbot licensing cost money that could have been saved for those programs.

    Some teachers started rephrasing the story after becoming alarmed about the possibility of cheating. “Teaching in the Age of AI” and “AI-Enhanced Curriculum Design” became standard workshop titles. Reluctant adaptation became the dominant feeling. The idea was that if the future was already here, it was better to mold it than to fight against it.

    However, it takes agency to shape something, and many faculty members felt theirs was slipping. Seldom have the ethical ramifications of AI in the classroom been thoroughly discussed. Rather, the discussion was rebranded as an advancement in pedagogy through technology. Efficiency took the place of inquiry. Perspective was replaced by personalization.

    An AI training invitation and a layoff notice were received in the same month, according to a San Francisco State professor. It was difficult to overlook the irony. At the same time that power structures were being incorporated into educational software, entire programs intended to critique them were being dismantled.

    I couldn’t get that contradiction off my mind.

    Others counter that the advantages of AI are too great to be disregarded. With the help of adaptive learning tools, students can adjust their coursework to fit their own pace, which is especially helpful for those who might otherwise fall behind. When used properly, automated grading can greatly lessen administrative burden. Additionally, AI-driven simulations provide students with extremely flexible and safe practice environments in domains such as medicine.

    AI provides previously unattainable accessibility features for students with disabilities and non-native English speakers. Real-time translation, language correction, and transcription tools have significantly increased inclusivity. These developments are not insignificant. They frequently change people’s lives.

    However, the introduction of these benefits follows a remarkably similar pattern: it is top-down and lacks substantive faculty dialogue. AI is portrayed as unavoidable. One administrator described resistance as “anti-progress.”

    Some academics are resisting, especially in the humanities. They contend that one of the few remaining settings where complexity isn’t reduced to an algorithm is the classroom. They remind us that education is about more than just imparting knowledge. It’s debate, disagreement, and interpretation. Sentences can be produced by a machine, but it cannot mimic the gradual development of an intellectual breakthrough.

    Others caution about more profound cultural changes. Students’ ability to tolerate ambiguity, which is an essential component of academic maturity, may decline as they grow accustomed to receiving summaries produced by AI. Writing from the University of York, professors Leo McCann and Simon Sweeney observed that many of their students misunderstood historical texts because they relied on ChatGPT’s unimpressive, self-assured answers.

    They weren’t incorrect. I once had students examine an essay by Henry Ford from the 1920s. One-third of them confidently stated that Ford was an innovative human resources manager. They were required to evaluate his autocratic tendencies as part of the assignment. It was not read by them. ChatGPT did.

    At its worst, AI teaches students to avoid hardship rather than just covering up ignorance. Cognitive offloading develops into a routine. Responsibilities are outsourced along with reflection.

    Paradoxically, this undermining is most evident in the very fields that are supposed to investigate the effects of technology. Departments that are best suited to examine labor, power, and automation, such as Sociology and Gender Studies, are often the first to lose funding. The adoption of AI feels seamless in their absence.

    However, if integration is carried out in an ethical, nuanced, and transparent manner, there is still hope. A number of organizations are starting to lay out more precise rules, stressing that AI should supplement human judgment rather than take its place. Additionally, faculty unions are advocating for participatory policy-making that prioritizes pedagogy over platform.

    It is not a question of whether AI should be used or prohibited. The decision is whether to allow it to subtly and unquestioningly change education or to rigorously and carefully address its ramifications.

    AI reflects the intentions of its user, just like any other tool. How honestly we question its purpose will determine whether it turns into a dangerously subtle substitute or a remarkably effective partner.
