Amazon has open(Opens in new tab)Thanks to the intelligence provided by the Counterfeiting Crime Unit of the company (CCU), it has helped law enforcement agencies crackdown on three major counterfeiting operations within China.

Amazon’s cooperation resulted in nearly a quarter million counterfeit goods being seized from Guangdong and Jiangxi. Imitators included BMW, Porsche and General Motors as well as Hugo Boss, Puma, Under Armour, and General Motors.

The above items did not reach Amazon customers or move along the supply chain. Amazon also stated that any listings linked to counterfeiters had been removed from the site.

CCU provided intelligence that included the location of the warehouses. This information was passed on to the local authorities. The Public Security Bureaus (PSBs) in China are currently investigating the main suspects.

Amazon seized over three million counterfeit products last year, including some products in fulfillment centres that were intended for customer use.

Amazon was able to detain 84 people who had obtained false business identities and licenses in order to create seller accounts. Amazon claims that another 2.5 million people have been stopped from creating seller accounts.

It also filed joint lawsuits against famous brands, including Cartier and WWE, whose merchandise was copied illegally. It filed a lawsuit against or referred more than 600 criminals from Europe, China, and the United States in 2021.

“Our efforts to identify counterfeit organizations are working,” stated Kebharu Smith, Director of CCU. He expressed his gratitude for the “law enforcement authorities acting upon our referrals” and following these cases closely.

Dharmesh Mehta, Vice President of Global Selling Partner Services at Amazon, added that “while we are proud of the progress we have made, we will not stop until we get to zero, and we will continue to invest and innovate until we get there.”
