Cyber Monday isn’t always about the expensive stuff. It’s not always about the expensive stuff, you know what I’m referring to: 65-inch 4K TV for $499Which King size mattress for $870(Opens in a new window)Oder that Air fryer for $54.99. Sometimes it’s the little things that matter. I don’t mean the smallest things, like a 1TB SD Card that can fit on one fingertip.
Currently, I am very excited by a Cyber Monday dealOne of these cards cost $99 for storage. It contained 4 heavy 256GB hard drives that were roughly the same length as half a loaf.
This Cyber Monday deal (really a Cyber Weekend deal, amirite?) I’m talking $99 1 TB SanDisk Ultra microSD Card(Opens in a new window) (Originally $136.99). This is not SansDisk’s fastest solid-state storage option. In another great Cyber Monday deal, I could have shelled out $117 for the “Extreme” version. This is nice, but I don’t require that much read and write speed (190MB/s instead of 150MB/s) and I really love the 1TB idea for less than $100.
You have to know a bit about me to understand why this deal is so exciting.
- First, I’ve been in this business for a while and have seen nearly every aspect of computer storage.
- Second, I save everything. This means that I don’t have enough storage.
- Third, I am prone to misplacing microSD card and am always on the lookout for new ones.
Let’s get to the point. Back in the mid-80s our storage options were limited. We had only 8 and then 5 inch hard drives that could store, if lucky, 360K. IBM gave us 1.44MB, 3.5 inch floppy disks in 1986. They were not floppy, but they were all in hard protective covers, which was the standard throughout the ’90s. Small spinning hard drives were also available. Until the mid 90s, gigabytes wasn’t really a term.
While hard drives increased in storage space, portable storage continued shrinking and growing in capacity. Flash drives were initially limited in storage space to a typical floppy drive, but they soon offered megabytes and even gigabytes of storage.
I can still recall the moment I first held a 16GB microSD in my hands in the early 2000s. It was a prototype at the time and I wondered when I would use this card and that much storage. I couldn’t even imagine 4K video and 24MP photographs.
I now have microSD cards in 32GB, 128GB, 256GB and 32GB on my desk.
There isn’t enough space
My second point, which is why I always need more storage space, I attribute to my love for photography and drones. I take lots of photos of birds and the moon. sony alpha a6000It works with standard SD cards. I also have a small set of micro-SD Card adapters. Just insert the small card in the large one and you can use it as any other standard SD. It’s very simple. My deals card includes a free memory adapter.
My drones are mostly equipped with microSD cards. They fly when I press the button to make small adjustments.
This is why I lose these cards so often. As much as they are my favorite cards, microSD cards can be almost weightless. They slip through your hands and you can easily lose them under your feet.
Why this card? Why now?
I would consider the $99 1TB microSD cards to be a threshold product. This means that prices for 1TB (or more), can be expected to drop to $99 or lower. For 1 terabyte, you pay a lot. iPhone 14 ProOr 1 terabyte macbook pro. You get screens, cameras, chassis, CPU and other hardware, but storage is not included in the price.
My only caution about microSD cards: While I am certain you can find CyberMonday microSD deals that are cheaper, be aware. SanDisk is a trusted brand that I trust. It’s a trusted brand, and you might not be satisfied with the card’s performance if you use off-brand storage. I have found that the cards with lower prices don’t hold up to writing, deleting and rewriting. Errors can quickly occur, rendering the card unusable.
But, if your card is like this, you’ll most likely be happy. You can get 5TB of storage for only $495. That’s pretty cool, huh?
