REvil, the group behind the attack on the Australian health insurer, posted an update on their blog earlier this week, saying “Happy Cyber Security Day!!! Added folder is full. TechCrunch reports that the case is closed.
The blog has been unavailable since publication of the post. This makes it difficult to verify the authenticity of the files. Medibank claimed that the volume contained six raw data files and was compressed into an archive. This was Medibank’s largest data leak to date, with six gigabytes of data.
No financial statements were prepared
She stated that she was analyzing the data, but that it was the data that the criminal stole.
“While our investigation continues, there are currently no indications that financial or banking data was taken. The theft of personal data is not enough to enable financial fraud or identity. The raw data we have analyzed today so far is incomplete and difficult to understand,” Medibank posted in an update.
The company stated that REvil will continue to release files on the dark internet, despite the group’s claim that everything has been leaked.
Medibank was attacked by REvil, an organization with alleged Russian connections, in a ransomware attack on October 2022.
After an initial investigation, the company was reported to have taken information about 9.7 million customers. endpoints(Opens in new tab)As well as data on half a,000,000 other health claims.
David Kojkar, the CEO of the company, clarified via LinkedIn later what data was captured. He stated that “The criminal didn’t have access to credit cards and bank details or data regarding health claims for additional services”
Later, it was discovered that REvil had obtained client names, dates, passport numbers, information about medical claims and sensitive files relating to abortions and other alcohol-related illnesses. It demanded $9.7million in ransom and one dollar per customer.
