    A chatbot that can troubleshoot your router or an AI-generated poem may appear energy-light at first, almost fleeting. However, a massive, humming network of servers that require an increasing amount of our world’s electricity is hidden behind every typed query and synthesized video.

    AI and its data centers are expected to consume more than twice as much electricity by 2026, according to a recent report from the International Energy Agency. By that time, these digital infrastructures might consume more electricity each year than Japan as a whole.

    This is a completely new trend, not just the continuation of digital growth. The current wave of AI is pushing toward raw computational power, in contrast to earlier tech booms that concentrated on efficiency. Large GPU clusters are needed for generative tools like GPT, image creators, and video models. These clusters run constantly and produce a lot of heat, necessitating the use of massive cooling systems, which frequently involve fresh water and additional electricity.

    Remarkably, one generative AI query can use up to ten times as much processing power as a conventional search. It is difficult to overlook the cumulative effect when you multiply that by the billions of interactions that occur every day.

    In recent years, I’ve observed that discussions about AI almost never address energy unless they focus on how AI can reduce energy consumption. Researchers are now, however, changing that narrative. AI is becoming one of the grid’s most significant new challenges, not just a tool for grid optimization.

    According to the Department of Energy, data centers in the US used approximately 176 terawatt-hours in 2023, or 4.4% of the total amount used nationwide. Depending on growth rate, that share could increase to 6.7% to 12% by 2028. That change is occurring covertly, primarily behind rows of humming fans and concrete fences, but it would be remarkably similar to the growth of entire industrial sectors.

    Big tech companies are already preparing for this future. While Meta is looking into nuclear options to ensure stable power supplies, Microsoft is spending more than $50 billion on new AI infrastructure. A large portion of Apple’s half-trillion dollar commitment for U.S.-based operations will go toward energy-intensive AI research and development. It is estimated that the Stargate project, an OpenAI-backed plan to construct several mega-data centers, will consume more electricity than some states in the United States.

    If predictions come true, AI may be responsible for almost half of the increase in electricity demand in developed economies by 2030. Its share may surpass 50% in nations like Malaysia and Japan. In a matter of years, that represents a significant reallocation of energy resources.

    There are substantial carbon implications associated with these growing energy demands. Data centers currently account for around 1% of CO2 emissions worldwide, but this percentage is predicted to rise. These facilities’ carbon intensity of power is 48% higher than the U.S. average, according to MIT Technology Review. This is partly because they rely on fossil fuels when renewable energy sources are either unavailable or insufficient.

    However, some of the most progressive energy experts maintain a cautious optimism in spite of these numbers. They contend that the same AI systems that are increasing energy consumption may also open up new efficiencies, such as improving building operations, simplifying supply chains, and hastening battery technology advancements.

    Real-time emissions reductions, predictive maintenance, and even smarter load balancing are all possible with AI integration into energy systems. The outcome of this race between burden and benefit is still unknown.

    Requiring tech companies to pair their data centers with low-carbon or renewable power sources is one possible course of action. Long-duration energy storage, geothermal, and on-site solar arrays are already being tested by businesses. The speed at which these can scale, however, continues to be a limitation.

    In the meantime, worries about water use are growing. Millions of gallons of freshwater can be used daily by the evaporative cooling systems found in many data centers. This becomes a significant environmental trade-off in arid areas or during droughts.

    A few governments are starting to take action. Ireland has put a temporary stop to the approval of new data centers. Zoning regulations and emissions limits have been tightened in the Netherlands. The Department of Energy has started initiatives in the US to support utilities in updating grids to manage AI-driven spikes and to promote flexible, resilient data center designs.

    One thing is very evident from the IEA’s most recent report: AI and energy have a lot in common. Countries must make equal investments in infrastructure, regulation, and power generation if they hope to benefit from artificial intelligence in the form of increased productivity, scientific discoveries, and economic growth.

    It is feasible to create AI systems that are extremely effective rather than environmentally expensive through strategic alliances and more intelligent design. However, industry leaders will need to consider power budgets and carbon footprints in addition to performance metrics and model size.

    It also means that governments need to give priority to expanding flexible grids, supporting clean energy technologies, and having open communication with the tech industry. AI is unquestionably here to stay. Whether we can construct the energy systems to support it without jeopardizing our climate goals is the current question.

    A tipping point has been reached. AI requires energy that is concrete, traceable, and expanding quickly; it is not an abstract concept. The digital age is getting more tangible, from the hum of servers to the flow of water and electrons. And how we react will determine the next stage of our shared energy future, not just the success of new tools or apps.
