It’s the end for Westworld: HBO has announced that the fourth season of the show, which aired earlier in the year, will be its last. This announcement comes ahead of the fifth and final season.

“Over the past four season, Lisa and Juna took viewers on a mindblowing journey, raising standards at every step,” the statement stated. “We are very grateful for them, along with their extremely talented cast and producers, crew, as well as all our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot. It was a pleasure to be with them on this journey.
Joey and Nolan had expressed their desire to end the series and finish any loose ends. Season 4 ended in an obscure manner, which was not unusual for Westworld.
Joey and Nolan said that Westworld was a landmark in their careers. “We are so grateful to our exceptional cast and crew for creating these indelible characters and wonderful worlds. I was honored to tell these stories about the future of consciousness – both human and beyond – in the short period of time before our AI leaders stopped us.”

Inspired by the 1973 movie of the same name, Westworld is initially set in a futuristic amusement park inhabited by artificial intelligence-controlled robots. The park was designed to look like the American Old West and allowed humans to play role-plays and fantasies.
As you might expect things quickly go wrong at the park. The four seasons of the series took viewers on a journey through concepts of free will and consciousness, artificial intelligence, ethics and technological advancement. The show’s scope grew to include other theme parks and eventually, real-world settings.
It has attracted its fair shares of star power too: Thandie Newton and Evan Rachel Wood were among the on-screen stars. Over the course of its run, the series received 54 Emmy nominations as well as nine wins.
In the end, though, it seemed like she couldn’t keep enough viewers for HBO to continue her work. Strong viewership numbers during the first season declined season after season, with some critics complaining that the show’s various ins and outs—which involve leaps in time, memory, and reality— It was so hard to keep up.
Ultimately, HBO didn’t give a reason to cannibalize Westworld, whether because of budget cuts, show numbers, or something else — but the series clearly wasn’t the powerhouse it was in the beginning.
