A fake account pretending to be LeBron James, falsely tweeted that the basketball star was asking for a deal. Another fake account with a blue checkmark claiming to be former President George W. Bush tweeted, “I miss murdering Iraqis.”
A fake account that claimed to be Eli Lilly received 1,500 retweets. It also gained more than 10,000 likes. It remained online until Thursday afternoon. A spokesperson for Eli Lilly stated to The Post Thursday that the company is “in contact” with Twitter to address the problem.
Twitter appears to be playing a whacka-mole with fake accounts. Some were suspended on Friday, but many remained online. The rollout of new features to its Twitter Blue subscription product has been difficult. Many people reported that the Blue option had disappeared from their applications by Thursday night.
Twitter did not immediately respond when we asked for comment.
Two weeks of chaos have been created by Musk’s decision to suspend a premium product. He is the world’s wealthiest man and a Twitter superuser. Musk, who sees himself as the CEO of companies such as SpaceX and Tesla, has been quick to implement the changes but has had to retrace several times in recent days.

Twitter Blue is Musk’s first major product change: an overhaul of Twitter’s verification system — opening the process to accessing a blue check mark for users who were willing to pay. Musk raised concerns about the design and reissued the initial release.
This rapid product rollout was especially troubling for privacy personnel, who quit some Thursday. They stated that they needed security reviews as required by Twitter’s entry order with Federal Trade Commission earlier in the year. This was following allegations that the company used personal information to deceive customers for advertising purposes.
The European Data Protection Commission has stricter data privacy rules than the United States. On Friday, regulators were closely watching developments on Twitter. Graham Doyle, spokesperson for DPC told the Washington Post that the Irish Data Protection Commission has set up a meeting on Monday with Twitter officials.
Irish regulators intend to talk with Twitter about the recent departure by Damien Keran, chief data protection officer at the company. Doyle stated that EU laws require companies hire a specific employee. Irish regulators were not notified of the departure of the data protection officer before it was reported to media. The Irish regulator plans to also pressure Twitter officials over key decisions. The processing of personal information of EU users is still being done in Ireland after the departure and demobilization.
Ireland is currently the European data protection authority responsible for overseeing Twitter in Europe. Twitter may need to respond to each regulator in each member state of the European Union if the company ceases to make major decisions there. The UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office released a statement Friday saying it was continuing monitoring the situation via Twitter. He encouraged anyone with concerns, to report to the office.
Musk tweeted overnight that the site had the most active users on Thursday.
Musk was in trouble for account impersonation over the weekend. Many people used the internet to change their names and pretend they were billionaires.
