The rumored DJI Mini 3 has officially taken to the air — and this compact drone could be the new perfect home for beginners looking for their first flying camera.

The DJI Mini 3 Pro is the more expensive version of the DJI Mini 2 Pro, but the drone maker claims that the Mini 3 will still be available for purchase. It is also lighter than the other drones and therefore exempted from drone regulations in many countries.

What is the Mini 3 Pro missing? The Mini 3 Pro’s main features are OcuSync 3.0 connectivity, and obstacle avoidance sensors (for finding objects in front and behind it).

    Specifications of DJI Mini 3

    Sensor: 1/1.3 inch CMOS
    lens:
    24mm f/1.7
    video:
    Maximum 4K/30p, Max 2.7K/60p
    Pictures:12MP (JPEG or RAW).
flight time: 38 minutes per charge
    Connecting: OcuSync 2.0
Obstacle avoidance sensors:It is down only
    Maximum video bit rate:100 Mbps
    Wind resistance Level 5
    Weight:249 grams

The Mini 3 uses DJI’s older O2 video transmission. This will allow the drone to fly at a much greater range and be more reliable in connecting to your controller than its more expensive sibling. Although the Mini 3 Pro has the same sensor size as the Mini 3, it isn’t capable of shooting 4K/60p video. The Mini 3 also has a bit speed of just over 100Mbps.

These missing features are minor issues for most pilots. The DJI Mini 3 is a significant upgrade to the Mini 2. It has a larger sensor, vertical video feeds and a longer flight time of 38 mins. It also integrates with DJI’s new RC controller.

These improvements make the Mini 3 slightly more expensive than its predecessor, the Mini 2.

Price-wise, it sits almost exactly between the Mini 3 Pro and Mini 2, starting at $469 / £439 / AU$699 (for drone only without a controller) and going up to $699 / £669 / AU$1,019 To bundle with the DJI RC controller, which has a built-in screen which means you don’t need to use your smartphone to get an on-board view of the drone.

DJI Mini 3 price and release dates

The DJI Mini 3 isn’t as affordable as the Mini 2 in 2020. For example, a bundle of the Mini 3 with DJI’s RC-N1 controller (the device with a mount for your smartphone) costs $100 / £100 / £80 Australian dollars more than the Mini 2’s equivalent package, likely due to a combination of inflation and the Mini 3’s improved features.

However, the Mini 2 will still be on sale (for now) if you want a more affordable drone, and the Mini 3 is still much cheaper than the premium Mini 3 Pro – buy both drones with a DJI RC controller (which is what we would recommend do it, if you can), and the Mini 3 runs $210 / £190 / AU $280 cheaper.

    DJI RC-1 controller $559 / £519 / AU$829 $759 / £709 / $1,119 $449 / £419 / AU$749
    DJI RC Controller $699 / £669 / AU$1,019 $909 / £859 / AU$1,299 Unavailable

DJI has also returned its “Fly More Combo” bundles to the Mini 3. These bundles include useful extras such as spare propellers, two smart flight batteries, a charging hub and a shoulder bag. The “Fly More Pro” option on the Mini 3 Pro was an additional, but you can get the Mini 3, controller, and extra accessories for less than what you would pay separately.

The Mini 3 Fly More Combo costs $718 / £678, while those in Australia instead get the Fly More Combo Plus package (AU$1,118), which includes a battery that promises up to 51 minutes of flight time . If you’re feeling particularly flush and want the ultimate Mini 3 bundle, you can also get the Fly More Combo bundle with DJI RC controller for $858 / £828 (or AU$1,378 for the equivalent Fly More Combo Plus bundle).

Analysis: What is DJI’s new sweet spot for?

The Mini 3 Pro, which arrived in May, stole some of the DJI Mini 3’s thunder. The Mini 3 Pro introduced many of the most striking features, including a bright f/1.7 lens and a 1/1.3-inch CMOS sensor. You can also flip the drone 90 degrees to capture high-quality vertical videos.

The Mini 3 Pro feels like a Mini 3 Pro stripped down, but the Mini 3 is a nice upgrade to the Mini 2. We were impressed by its camera module in DJI Mini 3 Pro reviewIts “ISO handling was, without a doubt,” they said.

Although the Mini 3’s camera is supposed to be comparable to its more expensive sibling, it lacks a 4K/60p mode, and has a lower video bitrate (100Mbps) than the Mini 3 Pro’s 150Mbps. Its flight time is 38 minutes, which is slightly less than its sister.

It is a shame that some DJI’s automated shooting modes such as Timelapse and Asteroid are missing from the Mini 3. This creates a sense of deliberate DJI throttling to separate the drone lines. The Mini 3’s maximum range is now 10km instead of 12km due to the absence of OcuSync 3.0 transmission.

Overall, the Mini 3 is a great drone for its price. If the Mini 3 is still too expensive for you, there are some great deals on the Mini 2, making it an affordable entry-level option.
