Skyfall sees a worn-out and older James Bond return to his duties after a terrorist attack on MI6’s headquarters. This film’s overall tone is darker than many of its predecessors but it’s still a positive one.

This is a great movie to watch with the entire family, but it may be too intense for younger children. There’s some mild violence and cussing, but overall it’s a family-friendly movie that takes a unique spin on the Sherlock Holmes mythos.

Army of the Dead (2021).

What you need to know

  • Rating:R
  • Runtime: 2 hours, 28 Minuten
  • Director: Zack Snyder
  • Main cast: Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell, Matthias Schweighofer
  • Date published:May 21, 2021

Army of the Dead is a zombie thriller mixed with a crime drama. The movie is set in a post-zombie world. A group of mercenaries risk their lives in order to win the greatest amount of their lives. As they travel to Las Vegas, which is ravaged by zombies, they find themselves in a dangerous situation.

Gory yet fun, this isn’t a movie for young ones but should be fine for teens and older. If you love zombie movies, this one scratches that itch though it doesn’t exactly break any major ground. For those that aren’t into zombie movies typically? You might still be surprised, just like me. It’s a good crime thriller, the zombie angle just helps set it apart from those types of films.

Red Notice (2021).

What you need to know

  • Director: Rawson Marshall Thurber

Red Notice follows an FBI profiler (played by  Dwayne Johnson) in his attempt to capture a wanted art thief (Ryan Reynolds). The profiler is forced into working with the thief in order to catch a more difficult target.

If you’re looking for a fun, fast popcorn flick, you won’t be disappointed. The story is fairly standard fare and the twists are predictable. It’s not a ratings darling either, but it’s actually a fun watch and does better with average viewers than critics.

Netflix’s best comedy movies

Men in Black (1997)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Runtime: 98 minutes
  • Director: Barry Sonnenfeld
  • Main cast:  Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Fiorentino
  • Genre(s): Comedy
  • Critical reception 37 Metacritic, 6.3 IMDB

What if there were people who could keep us safe from all the dangers of the night? That’s the Men in Black. An LA cop begins to suspect that there might be aliens in the city. He joins the shadowy organization that manages human-alien relations, without the world knowing. Then he begins training as an extraterrestrial threat.

If you’re looking for something fun, campy and relatively safe for all but the youngest viewers, we recommend checking this film out. Smith and Jones have a great chemistry on stage as work partners J and K, and while the movie isn’t exactly full of surprises, it has a lot of charm and there are plenty of laughs to be had.

Austin Powers (1997)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • Director: Jay Roach
  • Main cast: Mike Myers, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael York
  • Genre(s):Comedy
  • Critical reception 51% Metacritic, 7.0 IMBD

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was one of the most popular sleeper hits of the 1990s. It also spawned two (much less good) sequels.  This parody of James Bond is about a secret agent. His nemesis Dr. Evil has frozen Austin, and Austin will be thawed when Dr. Evil returns. Now back and ready for action in the 90s, Austin is a man out of time who needs to adapt to the present day to thwart Dr. Evil’s plans of world domination.

This movie has a lot of sexual humor, though it’s mostly of an innuendo nature. Probably not the best for families unless all your kids are teens, but it’s a nostalgia romp if you’re seen it before and absolutely worth watching if somehow you missed it during the 90s.

Monty Python & the Holy Grail (1975).

What you need to know

  • Rating:PG
  • Runtime: 89 minutes
  • Director:Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones
  • Main cast:Graham Chapman, John Cleese Eric Idle Terry Jones Terry Gilliam Michael Palin
  • Genre(s):Comedy
  • Critical reception 70% Metacritic, 7.3 IMBD

After gaining a cult following for their work on the BBC comedy show Monty Python’s Flying Circus and a movie based on it, this group of sketch comedians blew audiences away with their first original film. Monty Python’s Holy Grail remains one the most funny movies ever made. This movie is also perhaps the best about King Arthur’s myth. If you’ve never seem it, prepare to start quoting a ton of its famous lines. You can also watch the entire run of Monty Python’s Flying CircusAnd Monty Python’s Life of BrianNetflix

This movie has plenty of family-friendly comedy, including killer bunny rabbits and knights who say “nee” – there’s plenty to enjoy. It’s far from high-brow, but it is funny enough even younger child might just get a kick out of it.

Addams Family movie (1991).

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Runtime:1 hour, 39 Minuten
  • Director/Creator: Barry Sonnenfeld
  • Main cast: Anjelica Huston, Christina Ricci, Raul Julia, Christopher Llyod
  • Genre(s):Dark Comedy, family
  • Critical reception 68% Metacritic, 7.3 IMDB

Since 1964’s original Addams Family, the original was introduced. There have been many spin-offs and reboots of the show, including the highly-popular Wednesday series. Perhaps the most well-known spinoff is the 1991 Addams Family movie about the kooky, creepy family.

This movie is great for both Addams Family fans and those who love Wednesday’s new series. While there’s a lot of slapstick violence, the movie is pretty tame for all ages and even my five-year-old loves this one. Overall it’s great comedy and one that’s good for all ages.

The Nice Guys (2016)

If you’re looking for a fun action flick, you won’t be disappointed. It is full of dark humor, suggestive scenes, and language. It’s a lot of fun.

The Mitchells Vs. The Machines (2021).

What you need to know

  • Director/Creator:  Michael Rianda
  • Main cast: Danny McBride, Maya Rudoph, Abbi Jacobson, Michael Rianda
  • Genre(s): Animation, comedy, family

The Mitchells are a typical, quirky, but well-meaning family. However, not everything in their lives is perfect. As Katie prepares for college, she is particularly unhappy in her relationship with her father. She hopes to find people who understand her. Something she can’t say she feels about her own dad. Hoping to make things better between them, Katie’s father takes the whole family on one last family road trip before Katie goes off for college. It is a pretty ordinary premise… until the robot invasion.

If you’re looking for a feel-good family film about coming together as a family in a crisis, you’ll love this. The humor and art style can be very quirky and strange, which made the movie more memorable for us.

The Sea Beast (2022).

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG
  • Runtime:119 minutes
  • Director: Chris Williams
  • Main cast:Karl Ubran. Zaris Angelel Hator. Jared Harris. Marianne Jean Baptiste
  • Genre(s):Family/kids, action and animation
  • Critical reception 74% Metacritic, 7.1 IMDB

Since hundreds of years, humans have been at odds with sea monsters. For hundreds of decades, monster hunters have been traversing the oceans in an attempt to hunt the beasts down to extinction. Everything changes when a young girl named Maisie Brumble stows away on a legendary sea monster hunter’s ship. They eventually encounter a sea creature together and discover everything they thought they knew about them is wrong.

While Sea Beast has a very B-movie feel in terms of animation and voice acting, it’s actually a pretty charming film. You’ll definitely get some How to Train Your Dragon and even Moana vibes from this film, though obviously the quality isn’t to that level.

Klaus (2019)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG
  • Runtime:97 minutes
  • Director: Sergio Pablos
  • Main cast: Jason Schwartzzman, Sergio Pablos, JK Simmons, Norm Macdonald, Joan Cusack
  • Genre(s):Action, animation, family/kids
  • Critical reception 65% Metacritic, 8.1 IMDB

This charming Christmas movie features a selfish postal worker who almost fails to pass the academy. In an effort to get him to behave, the academy sends him to a deep north town. This is a town in which no one gets along and no-one mails any letters. The postman eventually meets Klaus, a reclusive toymaker, and begins to plot his escape from the town and return to the good graces and support of the academy.

This is the perfect Christmas story. If you’re just looking for a good family film, I will say my kids often watch this one even outside the holiday season. It’s a great story with memorable characters and a unique perspective on the Santa origin story.

Paddington (2015)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG
  • Runtime:97 minutes
  • Director: Paul King
  • Main cast: Hugh Bonneville. Julie Walters. Sally Hawkins
  • Genre(s):Action, animation, family/kids
  • Critical reception 77% Metacritic, 7.3 IMDB

Based on the classic children’s book series, Paddington centers around a young bear who leaves the jungles of Peru to find a new home and reunite with a man that once helped his bear family in the juggle. Unfortunately, the trip doesn’t go as well as planned, and Paddington finds himself alone. He is able to find a family willing and able to take him in. It all seems perfect until he is sucked into a plot that revolves around the man who once supported their family.

This movie is great for younger kids, but older children might find the story and pace a little boring. For example, my newly turned teen won’t watch this one anymore, but my 5 and 9-year-olds still love it to this day.

Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG
  • Runtime:97 minutes
  • Director: Paul King
  • Main cast: Hugh Bonneville. Julie Walters. Sally Hawkins
  • Genre(s):Family/kids, action and animation
  • Critical reception 79% Metacritic, 7.9 IMDB

No, this isn’t the Disney Tom Hanks remake, thank goodness. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is a unique retelling of the famous classic story, but with some pretty unique changes to the typical formula. It is set in fascist Italy during World War II.  The design of the titular puppet is simpler and less realistic than the Disney versions.

Keep in mind this is a darker and somewhat sadder take on Pinocchio, and that means it’s not for really young kids. It does have a great message, and it could be great for older children (10+). This is a great video for adults, even if you don’t have any children.

Rebecca (2020)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG
  • Runtime:97 minutes
  • Director: Paul King
  • Main cast: Hugh Bonneville. Julie Walters. Sally Hawkins
  • Genre(s):Romance or drama
  • Critical reception 46% Metacritic, 6 IMDB

A young woman named Lily finds her way into a brief relationship with the man of their dreams. Soon after they are married, and she arrives at her husband’s family estate. That’s when things get complicated. Lily is actually her husband’s second wife, with the first wife, Rebecca, passing away in a boating accident prior to the events of the film. Soon she finds herself haunted by Rebecca’s legacy as she struggles to find her place in this new life.

If this movie sounds familiar, that’s because it’s a remake of the original Alfred Hitchcock classic. While the original is critically the better film, this new take feels more modern and is easier to watch and relate to in today’s world than the 1940s version.

The Good Nurse (2022).

What you need to know

  • Rating: R
  • Runtime:121 minutes
  • Director: Tobias Lindholm
  • Main cast:Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Chastain, Kim Dickens
  • Genre(s):Drama
  • Critical reception 65% Metacritic, 6.8 IMDB

This crime thriller drama centers upon Charles Cullen, a serial killer. It is told through Nurse Amy Loughren’s eyes. She is shocked to learn that Cullen killed dozens of patients in his time at the hospital.

If you like true crime dramas, you’ll want to give this one a chance. We also like that the story is told from the perspective of someone other than a serial killer. This is a refreshing break from all the true crime dramas currently on the market. Dalhmer).

Tick, Tick… Boom! (2021)

What you need to know

  • Rating: PG-13
  • Runtime:115 minutes
  • Director: Lin-Manuel Miranda
  • Main cast: Andrew Garfield, Alexandra Shipp, Robin de Jesus
  • Genre(s):Drama
  • Critical reception 74% Metacritic, 7.5 IMDB

Tick, Tick… BOOM! Tick, Tick… BOOM! is an autobiographical musical. It is based upon the life of Jonathan Larson who was the playwright behind Rent. Lin-Manuel Miranda is the director’s debut with this movie.

Whether you love Rent or somehow managed to never see it, this is still a movie worth watching largely due to Andrew Garfield’s impressive performance. Garfield gives Larson a brilliant performance in what is probably the best performance by the actor to date.

The Wonder (2022).

What you need to know

  • Rating: R
  • Runtime:103 minutes
  • Director: Sebastian Lelio
  • Main cast:Florence Pugh, Tom Burke and Kila Lord Cassidy
  • Genre(s): Period piece, drama
  • Critical reception 71% Metacritic, 6.6 IMDB

The Wonder is a period drama set in the Irish Midlands in 1862. The story centers on an English nurse who visits a small village to watch a young girl who has stopped eating and has not seen any negative effects. The mysterious illness not only garners the attention of medical doctors and nurses, but people from all across the country who want to witness the girl who doesn’t eat.

The Wonder is a great choice for those who enjoy mystery and period pieces. It’s also very loosely based on a true story. Well, sort of. Back in the 1800s there were many so-called ‘fasting girls’ who claimed they didn’t need to eat for weeks. Many believed it was a miracle of God. This movie is inspired by these events, but not bound to them.

After landing in the past, fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self to save the future and uncover a deep conspiracy.  They discover that not everything is as it seems in their past.

Ryan Reynolds seems to be in everything these days, though that’s not a bad thing depending on who you ask. This comedy is similar-ish if you enjoy Reynolds and his brand. Free Guy, for example) you’ll like this one. Even better is Walker Scobell’s performance as a young Adam Reed. To convincing effect, Scobell perfectly portrays Ryan Reynolds’ mannerisms.

Don’t Look Up (2021)

What you need to know

  • Runtime:2 hours, 25 seconds
  • Director: Adam McKay

Two relatively unknown astronomers were just going about their day until they noticed a tiny blimp in their data. This quickly leads to them discovering that a planet-killing asteroid is heading towards Earth. They attempt to convince the public about the threat but are stopped by politicians and rich businessmen.

Don’t Look Up is very much political satire and the humor can be a little dry and arguably preachy. If you like these kinds of movies, this film will give you a hard look at the ways politicians and business people manipulate the public.

The School for Good and Evil (2022).

What you need to know

  • Runtime:2 hours, 27 min

Two best friends discover from a local bookshop owner that there is a magical school called The School for Good and Evil. One of the girls tries to escape her village life and join the school to escape it. The other tries unsuccessfully to stop her. Both are magically taken into the school. The best part is that one of them is sent to school for good and the other to the opposite side.

The storyline might sound a bit like other similar movies such as Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, and in some ways, it is. If you enjoy movies like that, you’ll enjoy this one too. While it’s not a ratings darling it’s still a fun popcorn flick that’s easy to recommend.
