at recent days AWS re: Invent 2022The cloud giant unveiled a number of new products across its technology portfolio at a Las Vegas event. But this year, the most important launch was about data security.

Amazon Safety LakeIt is a new, security-focused data lake service. It aims at helping users get more from their security information. It will centralize all cloud security data within an organization in one place. This will make it easier for security personnel to automatically collect, consolidate and analyze it at a peterabyte scale.

Talking to TechRadar ProCJ Moses, CISO, Vice President of Security Engineering, was present at the event. AWSUnsurprisingly, Security Lake was keen to emphasize the significance of this launch. Security Lake was described at the event as the “cornerstone”, with security-themed announcements.

“This is the biggest game-changer,” he says. “There’s nothing like it in industry – that’s the reason we had to build it… There are many data lakes. There are also security data lakes. But it’s dependent on the analytics platform that delivers. That’s not how we roll.”

The company claims that Amazon S3 can be used to build new analytics, allowing security teams and security professionals to scan for potential security threats.

“We wanted to be an Open Platform with an Open Plan open sourceMoses notes that this is so that everyone can use it regardless of service provider.”

The constant security threats facing businesses make it a daunting task to maintain a safe customer base.

Moses isn’t fazed by the task. AWS’s employees are used to working at large scale, with a culture based on fixing problems.

“I don’t see it as a burden… It’s not a burden if you’re used working in a certain way and doing certain things. “

He noted that the threat landscape is becoming more turbulent due to the global geopolitical and macroeconomic conditions making criminals more desperate.

“When people cannot put food on the tables, they’re going be doing terrible things,” he says, referring to the increasing threats to the Internet.

“Everything that happens from a threat perspective, there’s always a human being behind the keyboard, and those human beings have motives — you have to look at those motives, and work out what level of threat they pose, and therefore how much risk we take from those actors.”

“We prevent bad things from happening to good people, not just across our cloud, but across the entire environment.”
