Benefits now, future expectations, limitations

This week Google announced the launch of MatterSmart displays and routers are the best options for many speakers. Smart home protocol has been in use for many years and aims to unify various platforms, such as Google HomeAmazon Alexa and Samsung SmartThings, as well as Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings, are all under one roof. This ensures interoperability, and makes it easy to set up. This is it. issueAlthough it is the ultimate smart home dream, there are some limitations.

The biggest difference is the easier setup and expanded interoperability of Matter-compatible devices.

Let’s say that you buy a new light sensor or connect it to a new light sensor. stringSupport and Material Compatibility. You’ll find it much easier to set up your Google Home app. You can scan a number (just like with) in many cases. This video from Nuki, an European smart lock manufacturer, is the best demonstration I have seen of Matter’s benefits in action. This video shows how simple it is to add the lock directly to Google Home.

This is great, but the best thing about it is that companies do this. Smart home devicesThere is no need to manually code each smart home ecosystem individually anymore. They can ensure their devices are compatible and enable support for Google Home. Amazon AlexaApple HomeKit Samsung SmartThingsThis will reduce development time & resources.

This may not be something you notice as a user. Many smart home devices support multiple platforms without Matter’s assistance. smart lightIt appears in the app that you are currently using. You’ll gradually see the benefits of having more options, as brands that support only one or two ecosystems may de facto open themselves up to more. This is an excellent example. v1.0 has been officially releasedAlthough the protocol was first released two months ago, it does not deliver on the promises that we have been hearing for years. There are limitations, and this is my opinion the main reason the substance doesn’t affect the average user as much as it could in future.

Or not Matter v1.0 doesn’t support many smart home device types.You can get it, including security cameras, doorbells, robot vacuums, and home appliances. It is not possible to get it. These limitations are a sign of limited capabilities To do anything else than basic controls or settings, you still need to use the dedicated app. Matter can open and close smart locks. However, you can’t issue access code to guests, change the number that a double-cylinder lock type rotates or view a history of who opened/closed it. This requires a dedicated app to manage the lock. At least one person must install it. This is true for many other types of devices.

Hubs are here for the long-termEven with Matter and Thread. I could write a thesis on the technical limitations, reasons for the business and long-term issues of the strategy. But suffice it to say that Philips will make it work. TingeIt can be used with bridge material to bring all lights together, but not to give command to individual lights. It won’t allow you to connect a Hue to a coil. Google Nest MiniWithout the bridge. The same applies to any Z-Wave or Bluetooth device.

And most importantly, Matter’s interoperability across platforms is still in its infancy. Google Home app rooms and groups are unlikely to transfer to Amazon Alexa. There are no routines or schedules. If you have a hybrid Android/iOS platform, don’t expect actions or automations created on one platform to appear on another and be editable on both. This could lead to chaos, so it’s best to stick with one ecosystem per home or keep one platform called “admin”.

Talking of officials Matter’s Multi-Admin experienceAlthough it has not yet been made available to all platforms, we know that Samsung and Google are working together to make it available in 2023. This will allow users to import any devices they have set up with SmartThings directly into the Google Home app.

Despite the limitations of Matter v1.0, we remain optimistic about the future. Things generally look pretty good for the materialThe fact that the biggest technology companies in the world have collaborated on this protocol gives them credibility and higher chances of success.

I believe that Thread’s emergence to be the most popular smart-home connectivity standard will be Matter’s greatest advantage. The smart home has been ubiquitous for the past decade, with many ZigBee protocols and different Z-Wave frequencies. RTS, InfraReds, Bluetooth, Wi–Fi, and other options. Matter’s launch has seen Thread and Wi-Fi emerge victorious. Thread will be able to sell smaller, more power-friendly or unplugged accessories while Wi-Fi will take over.

This will reduce the amount of fragmentation in the smart-home space and will also make it more durable. Because Thread is interlocking, any device that you add to your setup will act as a Node and power it. You don’t need to have your garden lights within reach of the Nest Wifi Pro. All you need is access to a motion sensor with wall outlet access to the router.

Already, we are detecting the beginnings of thread absorption. Aqara and Nanoleaf are soon to release new Thread-compatible switches, sockets and lights. Many companies will likely keep track of new hardware or hubs. Other communication protocols will not last forever, but they will become more specialized over time. As someone who has experimented with Z-Wave sensors, plugs, and other technologies for a while I will never again consider these devices. It’s a matter of all or nothing for me right now.

With the next updates to Matter, other benefits of Matter will be more obvious. There are many positive things in the future. More devices will be supported, more options and settings will be added for existing devices and proper syncing between platforms will be implemented. But that’s still a few more years away.

The material is interesting in theory for now, but it won’t have much impact on many of our lives. It won’t matter if you have a smart home already built and aren’t looking to expand it or if you plan to only use one ecosystem in the future. If you have a smart home, but don’t want to expand it with new hardware, this won’t matter. Buy new smart home devicesIf you are serious about making sure your smart home doesn’t depend on a platform, you should seriously consider it, even if it’s for future proofing and easy setup.

I have been putting off buying extra movement and open/close sensor sensors for a while, but now I’m finally spending the money and getting Eve stuff. Matter has made it possible for me to do this even though I have an Android Home and a Google Home.
