Press ESC to stop CES 2023Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), announced Qi2 as the successor to Qi. wireless chargerg standard. Qi2 (pronounced Chee 2) provides additional consumer transparency about device support. It also introduces an innovative magnetic power profile to align coils.

If you find all this familiar, it is. MagSave AppleIt’s a very similar idea. Apple is a WPC “steering” member and would have been an important contributor to the new specification, due to be finalized mid-2023. Does this mean Magsafe will be coming to Android? Both yes and no.

Magsafe for Android provides interoperability solutions

The Qi2 is essentially the Magsafe for Android in terms of what consumers can look forward to. It’s actually more Magsafe for everyone. This idea is not limited to Apple’s ecosystem. Magnetic wireless charging accessories and other accessories can be attached to the backs of future smartphones and other gadgets.

But there isn’t. MagSafe and Magneto ExtensionsFor a group of phones? Yes, it is. But it’s from Wild West. transformersThis doesn’t always work with other products, and it doesn’t guarantee the intended user’s experience, especially when wireless charging is concerned. Magsafe for Android as it stands currently has its perks. It unlocks a wide variety of cool new features, including camera mounts to Small power bank enclosuresIt is much better than having 101 ways to connect accessories with your phone. The lack of a standard outside of Apple is not perfect, and it can hinder interoperability.

Qi2 is essentially everyone’s Magsafe. However, there are some differences.

Qi2 will standardize magnetic attach and ensure compatibility with a wide range products and even ecosystems. WPC stated that this standard targets confusion among consumers about Qi certification. It will ensure that certified products can be interoperable across brands and is safe, effective, as well as interoperable. Apple and Samsung, along with many other companies are expected to launch Qi2-certified items in 2023 and 2024. Convenience is the key theme, which is good news for consumers. Praise God.

Although the new standard is primarily intended for phones, accessories can also be used with it. This is great news, especially for wearables or oddly shaped devices such as AR/VR headsets. After several years, USB-CIt is now possible to charge multiple devices using a single connector interface, except for Apple’s iPhone. Qi2 plans to do the exact same in the wireless world, and there is no doubt that having one wireless connector would be highly desired for smartphones, smartwatches and other accessories. It’s not only convenient, but also from an e-waste and cost perspective.

It’s a win-win situation for both travel convenience and electronic waste.

WPC’s Qi2 seems very promising on paper. The real test is how quickly third parties adopt the new standards and whether the standard works across brands.

Yes, in the sense that Qi2 implements the same idea of a magnetic connector as Magsafe. Apple can use Qi2 to create compatible accessories.

Two sides of the same coin: Qi2 and Apple Magsafe

It is based on Magsafe technology, and has a power output of 15 watts. However, the Qi2 uses a different magnetic design than Apple’s Magsafe.

Apple has provided some of its technology and insights to Qi2, but this is not the Magsafe standard. There are still major differences and the Magsafe will continue to be its own thing.

Qi2 and Apple Magsafe don’t have the exact same magnet pattern so it is unlikely that they’ll support the new standard. current iPhone modelsAccessories. This is worrying because Apple may not abandon its standards anytime soon. The magnetic accessories may still not work together well, but it is possible that there are some issues.

Qi2 does not necessarily represent a universal Magsafe Standard. There are major differences.

The draft specification requires Qi2 device transmitters to shake hands in order to authenticate, meaning that products not certified will not work. Although this reduces the uncertainty surrounding the current unregulated situation it could cause confusion among consumers about which accessories are compatible with their smartphones or wearables. What about Magsafe products for your phone that are not officially approved by the manufacturer? Will they work with the new Qi2 smartphone? It remains to be seen, but it seems doubtful.

While Qi2’s goals are noble, it’s not necessarily the cure — everything we’d hoped. It can be difficult to replace one standard with another, especially if there’s no backward compatibility.

Magsafe is Qi compliant, but only with a power of 7.5 watts. Magsafe is not compatible with Qi2.

What is the difference in Qi and Qi2?

What’s new in Qi2 compared to the original Qi Standard from 2015?

As we have already mentioned, the main difference lies in the introduction of the magnetic energy profile. The new profile ensures that smartphones and other products powered by rechargeable battery are fully compatible with chargers. The Qi2 has the same safety-oriented foreign objects detection feature as its predecessor.

Second, Qi2 can enable wireless charging to be faster for certain devices. The Qi2 delivers the same power level as its predecessor, currently limited to 15W. Many Qi-enabled smartphones, including Apple’s iPhone are limited to 7.5W. This will change with Qi2, because the standard was created with magnetic coil coupling as a goal. This allows for improved energy efficiency and lower energy loss through air.

Qi2 and Qi are both limited to 15W. However, the improved coil alignment could increase charging speed.

WPC will eventually move to a faster wireless charging specification when Qi2 is finished in mid-2023. WPC hasn’t yet revealed how much power Qi2’s future versions will have. This improvement will be the basis of the next Qi2 version, but it won’t be available until 2024.

Qi2 introduces an innovative magnetic power profile to align charging devices. Both have the same 15W wireless charge power.

    When can I purchase a Qi2 unit?

This is a new announcement. The brands are yet not to announce their first Qi2 products or accessories.

According to the WPC Qi2-certified phones and chargers will be available in time to meet the 2023 holiday season. Major smartphone brands such as Apple and Samsung are expected to adopt this standard.
