Apple and Samsung, along with many other companies are expected to launch Qi2-certified items in 2023 and 2024. Convenience is the key theme, which is good news for consumers. Praise God.

Although the new standard is primarily intended for phones, accessories can also be used with it. This is great news, especially for wearables or oddly shaped devices such as AR/VR headsets. Apple has provided some of its technology and insights to Qi2, but this is not the Magsafe standard. There are still major differences and the Magsafe will continue to be its own thing.

While Qi2’s goals are noble, it’s not necessarily the cure — everything we’d hoped. It can be difficult to replace one standard with another, especially if there’s no backward compatibility.

What’s new in Qi2 compared to the original Qi Standard from 2015?

As we have already mentioned, the main difference lies in the introduction of the magnetic energy profile. The new profile ensures that smartphones and other products powered by rechargeable battery are fully compatible with chargers. The Qi2 has the same safety-oriented foreign objects detection feature as its predecessor.

According to the WPC Qi2-certified phones and chargers will be available in time to meet the 2023 holiday season. Major smartphone brands such as Apple and Samsung are expected to adopt this standard.
