According to Ofcom, more homes in the UK have now access to full fibre broadband connections than ever before due to the’record pace of roll-out.
In its annual report to UN, Ofcom stated that 12.4 million households have full fiber connections. This is an increase in fiber access of 4.3 million households over last year. Ofcom did reveal that household adoption continues to be low, despite the rollout moving at an accelerated pace. Only 25 percent of households with full fiber connections pay for it.

Average broadband speeds in Britain
According to the data, the average download speed for home broadband in the UK at the moment is 59.4Mbps. Despite the fact that the average speed is increasing the gap between the fastest and slowest speeds for UK households is growing. Many customers have now been able to access full fiber services. Full fiber connections (alongwith upgraded cable networks), have the potential for download speeds of up to one gigabit per Second (gigabit/s).
Thankfully, 97% of UK homes have ultra-fast broadband. On the flip side, almost 80,000 homes, and businesses, in the country, do not have access “decent” broadband. This is defined by the government to be download speeds of 10Mbps, and upload speeds up to 1Mbps.
This is the minimum speed that must be available to buildings under the Universal Service Obligation (USO), which provides a legal right to require a decent broadband connection, up to the cost limit of £3,400 per building.
The good news is that there are steps being taken to address this. While 80,000 homes still fall below the limit, this number is down from 123,000 last. Ofcom estimates that another 15,000 of these buildings will be covered within the next 12 month.
In addition, 5G’s popularity has increased dramatically in the past year. According to Ofcom, 70% of UK properties are located in areas where 5G service is available from at least one operator. This is an increase of approximately 50% compared to last year.
