Elon Musk is the new owner of Twitter Messing aroundIt appears that algorithmic recommendations are being added to the social network’s array of features.

Twitter support account notified users of the change by tweeting on Wednesday that it was “expanding recommendations to all users.” This is all done in the spirit of providing users with the best content (Instagram loves to use that line too). However, users are more likely to expect more paid content when they see more recommendations in a social media feed.

We want to ensure that everyone on Twitter is able to see the best content available, so we are expanding recommendations for all users, even those who haven’t seen it before.

Twitter did not provide any additional information about the changes to recommendations. However, it provided links to a blog post explaining how algorithmic content works as well as where it might appear. The post states that recommendations can appear in the homepage timeline, certain areas within the Explore tab, or anywhere else on Twitter. You can switch between the homepage and recent tweets by clicking on the shiny button at the upper right corner.

It is unclear if Twitter plans on airing more recommended tweets in the “home”, timeline or if this is a more aggressive move. We sent a tweet into the void asking the company for more information. Some users have already noticed changes to their home feeds.

Twitter offers two different feeds: “Recent Tweets,” which shows tweets from people you follow in chronological order, and “Home,” which is a curated collection of popular tweets from your followers. The latter, which sometimes includes some recommendations from outside our following lists, is a non-chronological collection containing tweets from people we have followed.

Pre-Musk is the basic outline for the rClearer recommendationsAfter backlash from his users, he reversed his decision. Users expressed similar concerns on Instagram about seeing their feeds filled by content from people they don’t follow. TikTok is committed to delivering algorithmically curated content, but other social platforms must be more cautious.

Because they were initially designed to allow users follow people they know (or have known), apps such as Instagram and Twitter must slowly run the algorithm tap to ensure that users don’t notice any sudden changes. In this instance, we will have to wait to see.
