While CGI may be in its heyday, Wednesday director Tim Burton was ready to go. He wanted a real-life actor to portray the Thing. hit Netflix series. Even if it is not. He isOnly a hand without any body.

“So we set off to find us an actor that could do the role,” says Tom Turnbull who is the visual effects supervisor for the dark comedy. “An actor who could look at his hands and use his fingers to perform all these actions was needed.”

It moves like scurrying across floors and into open windows, writing, turning magazine pages, and expressing a range of feelings—from hesitation and fear to determination and devotion—with the slight stretching or contraction of one or two fingers.

Turns out, that person is Victor DorobantoA 25-year-old Romanian magician/illustrist, who has never acted before. However, he immediately impresses Wednesday’s team with his fluid hand movements and intuitive ability.

Dorobanto states in a New behind-the-scenes video on NetflixShe explains how the team brought the object into being. You can love or you can rage.

The durbanto can channel true feelings quite easily. It can flip a bird, cuddle Wed’s shoulder, or writhe in pain. There are spoilers, but in one scene that the Thing shares with Wednesday, Uncle Fester, it’s easy for people to forget that the diseased part of the body isn’t real. This is how convincing Durbanto is at hand acting.

Durbanto wore a full body blue suit for the shoot. He kept his hand out so that the rest could be digitally erased after-production. A prosthetic wrist stump was placed over the Thing’s hand to transform it into a severed body section.

The magician often had the to crawl or crouch behind walls or underneath furniture to get his hand moving. The visual effects team closely worked with him to ensure the perfect placement.

Turnbull explains that “it’s slow for the crew because the have to light it up in such a way Victor doesn’t cast shadows,” in the video. There is much more that can be done.

What is the point of having something? Get the Wednesday Viral Dance?
