I cannot leave Meta Quest Pro. Since I first turned on the headset to test it, I’ve been blown away by its performance, and my Quest 2 — once the best among the gadgets I own — now sits gathering dust as I discard it in favor of this new VR hero. But, even though I am waiting impatiently for the Quest Pro to charge, I know the truth: I’m not in love the Meta Quest Pro. I love the MetaQuest Pro. Oculus Quest 3It’s hiding inside.
The Meta Quest ProMeta Upgrades are a premium quality upgrade Oculus Quest 2. The old, bulky, white-clad design has been replaced with a sleek black shell. It features better weight distribution and padding for extra comfort. The Quest Pro has enhanced specs internally, with a new Snapdragon XR2 Plus processor, which delivers a half-time increase in sustained power over regular Quest 2’s XR2, as well as a pair of LED mini displays panels. Each display is 1800×2096 pixels per eye, and has 37% more pixels/inch and 10% more pixels/notch than the Quest 2 panels.
As if that weren’t enough, Quest Pro features improved controllers. These are rechargeable and use cameras to improve tracking accuracy.
The package is superior to Quest 2. The Pro comes with a catch. It costs more than the Quest 2 but doesn’t give you enough bang for your bucks.
Too much of something good?
The improved Meta headset will set you back $1,500 / £1,500 / AU $2,450 – nearly four times the cost of the base Quest 2 at $400 / £400 / AU $630. Even if you compare the Pro to the more expensive Quest 2 256GB model which costs $500 / £500 / AU$790, the price discrepancy is nothing short of impossible to ignore.
It is reasonable to expect a price hike when you consider the Quest Pro’s numerous upgrades compared with its predecessor. However, what makes the price difficult to swallow is the headset’s unique functionality that feels like a gimmick at the moment.
Although face tracking is fascinating, it is not very useful if you don’t spend much time in Horizon Worlds and other Horizon apps. While the eye-tracking feature impressed me, it is limited in its ability to verify that the headset is properly adjusted and ensure that it is correctly positioned. Color pass also suffers from a lack of meaningful mixed reality experiences — most apps that use it offer perfectly fine VR-only options.
Meta and its colleagues will build a case over the next 12 months for why users should care more about color passthrough and face tracking. For now, however, the only real advantages it offers are a faster chip and a better screen. And while the improvements are noticeable, it’s not worth shelling out the extra $1,000 / £1,000 / AU$1,820 or so over the Quest 2.

Quest 3 VR headset is for me
Meta (f). Leaky designThe Quest 3 (indicating a significant improvement over the Quest 2) will be a better product than the Quest 2. However, it won’t be as feature-rich as the Quest Pro. This is likely due to the Quest Pro not having face/eye tracking and only offering basic passthrough functionality. We will likely see a more powerful chip and a better display than the predecessor.

The Quest 3 will be available at a more affordable price. Meta previously stated that the Quest 3 is for casual VR enthusiasts, while the Quest Pro models are for professionals and consumers who want the best experience possible (and are willing to pay the high price).
But I don’t have the next-level experience in tracking and mixed reality. I just want a device capable of making these things possible. The best Oculus Quest 2 games Run better. So if the Quest 3 can match the Quest Pro in the ways that matter most to me – for example, the Meta Quest Pro is stripped of its eye and face tracking capabilities – and sells for $500 or less (about £500 / AU$790) Then it will be a definite must-buy VR headset when it launches.
We won’t find out what Meta has in store for us until after it unveils Quest 3 at Meta Connect 2023, which is expected to be around October. But I’m already counting down the days. If you are unable to wait, Meta’s Quest 2 (and Quest Pro if it is available) will serve you well. But, considering how close we are now to the Quest 3 announcement I strongly recommend that you hold off unless you find an incredible Quest 2 offer like this. One of Black Friday 2022. If the Pro’s performance is anything, the Quest 3 looks just like the Quest 2 successor that I really want.
