Hiring a motorhome can be a thrilling experience, offering you the freedom to explore new destinations at your own pace. However, many first-time hirers make mistakes that can turn an exciting adventure into a stressful ordeal.

    1. Not Researching the Type of Motorhome Needed

One of the most common mistakes when hiring a motorhome is not thoroughly researching the type that best suits your needs. There are various types of motorhomes, ranging from compact campervans to larger, more luxurious vehicles. Choosing the wrong one can lead to discomfort, space issues, and a lack of essential facilities.

To avoid this mistake, make sure to assess your specific needs. Are you travelling solo or with a group? Will you need much storage space for equipment, or is simplicity more important? Think about the amenities you require, such as a toilet, shower, or kitchen facilities, and ensure the motorhome has them. Consider the type of terrain you’ll be travelling on as well, as certain motorhomes are better suited for off-road adventures, while others are designed for highways and cities.

    1. Underestimating the Amount of Space Required

Another common error is underestimating the amount of space needed for your trip. Motorhomes may look spacious in the brochure, but things can quickly become cramped once you’re inside with all your gear. Not having enough room for yourself, your travel companions, or your luggage can make your trip uncomfortable and stressful.

To avoid this mistake, consider how much space you’ll need. Consider the number of people in your party, the amount of luggage you’ll be bringing, and the space required for cooking, eating, and sleeping. It’s better to opt for a larger vehicle than risk feeling cramped during your journey. Take note of the motorhome’s layout to ensure it suits your needs – some motorhomes have more sleeping areas, while others might have larger kitchens or more storage space.

    1. Overlooking Insurance and Breakdown Coverage

When hiring a motorhome, many people fail to consider the insurance options available to them adequately. In most cases, the standard insurance that comes with the hire is insufficient to cover all potential risks. This could leave you vulnerable to hefty repair bills, especially in the case of an accident or breakdown.

Before committing to a hire, ensure you fully understand the insurance coverage provided. Check if it includes collision damage waivers, theft protection, and third-party liability. You may want to purchase additional coverage for peace of mind, especially if you’re planning a long road trip or driving in unfamiliar areas. Additionally, ensure you have breakdown cover in place. A breakdown on the road can be a nightmare, especially if you’re in a remote location with no immediate help available. Most hire companies offer breakdown cover, but it’s important to confirm that it’s included and what it covers.

    1. Failing to Plan the Route and Stops in Advance

It’s easy to assume that driving a motorhome means you can go wherever you please, but without a plan, you may find yourself in situations that make your trip far less enjoyable. Many hirers make the mistake of not planning their route and stopping in advance, leading to unnecessary stress and delays.

When hiring a motorhome, you must plan your route, including the places you want to visit, the distances you’ll cover, and where you’ll stay each night. Check for campsites, motorhome-friendly parking areas, and places with the necessary facilities for your motorhome. Many motorhomes need to be parked in specific areas that cater to larger vehicles, so make sure to book ahead, especially during peak seasons. It’s also a good idea to have a backup plan if your intended route is closed or difficult to navigate.

    1. Not Checking the Condition of the Motorhome Before Pick-Up

Lastly, a critical mistake was made when the motorhome’s condition was not checked before picking it up. Upon pick-up, many renters sign the paperwork and assume the vehicle is in perfect condition, but this can lead to problems if any damage or issues arise during the trip.

To avoid this, thoroughly inspect the motorhome before driving off. Walk around the vehicle and check for any visible damage, including dents, scratches, or cracked windows. Test all the essential equipment, such as the fridge, stove, and heating, and check that everything works properly. If you notice any issues, report them immediately to the hiring company and request a solution. Photos of the motorhome before departure can also be useful in case any damage claims arise later.
