Slow horsesHe was a slow starter when his first season began in April. It was another Apple TV success, but the marketing wasn’t strong enough to reach audiences. Instead, it relied on word-of-mouth. The result was a low-stakes spy drama that offered gentle suspense, something you don’t often see in today’s more serious age. It came together with a bit of black comedy and made for an incredible package. .
The second season of the show, which returns to Apple TV+ on December 2, will continue in that vein, but with less of its trademark humor. It is once again focused on the Slough house staff and is the closest thing MI5 has that can clear disgraced intelligence officers. The slow horses are often left to perform administrative work on donkeys, which is something no one else believes is worthwhile. You wouldn’t have a series of horses if you didn’t involve misfits in the grand machinations and intelligence community.
The second season is built on dead blackThe second in the Heron series Slough HouseRomance, and focuses on Lamb’s investigation into the murder of a former officer. Apple’s ban on spoilers means that I cannot tell from the plot that it contains “long-buried Cold War secrets” which “threatens to bring carnage to London.” Oh, and that “when contact is made with Russian villains, our hapless heroes must overcome individual failures and increase their espionage skills in a race for a way to prevent a catastrophe.”
The horses are disappointed that their championships did not lead to better things. We meet again shortly after the second season. Instead, the team is supplemented with Shirley Dander and Marcus Longridge (Kadiffkirwan) and sent back on their regular duties. River Cartwright (Jack Lowden), is clearly in a funk due to this. Jackson Lamb (Gary Oldman), a former agent, is suddenly interested in him enough to get back into business after he is found dead on a bus.
It’s not surprising that the show expects that you will remember a lot from the first season’s six-episode run. Despite the ongoing production, there is a significant tonal shift. The show is darker and has less of its trademark humor and slapstick. To be honest, the joke about Jackson Lamb’s inept grooming and non-stop eating starts to fade towards its end.
Book lovers will already be familiar Why?The series takes a darker path, but I found some of its twists to be very lightweight at first. Maybe it was years of binging series where nothing is shown that made me wait for the second shoe to appear. There is nothing in the Slow Horses universe. And even though you may see beloved characters go places you didn’t expect, remember that they are only for entertainment.
This is not a show that you can watch with just one eye on your phone. However, it’s fast-paced and you might lose your spot if you blink. Although I consider myself an attentive observer of the world, I found myself having pause to discover what a sinister Russian immigrant this man was. While you can see where the plot lines are heading, their collision is somewhat predictable. But I’m taking it, this isn’t the kind of show you need to unpick for hours on end on Reddit — just repeat to yourself that it’s just a show, and you really should relax.
Slow Horses season 2 belongs to Rosalind Eleazar, (Guy), as well as Saskia Reeves, (Standish), which have been given the space and time they need to develop their characters. While the former continues the main story, the latter shows how much steel is hidden beneath Standish’s flawed characters. The show is democratic enough for each character to get a note during the thrilling and heartwarming finale.
Season 2 of Slow Horses will debut on Apple TV+ on Friday December 2nd with two new episodes. The next episodes will be available every Friday through December 30th. Seasons 3 and 4 have been already greenlit.
