“There has been a lack of innovation around treatments that cause great suffering, in large parts because of past failures which have frustrated even the most skilled researchers,” Michael Spiegelmacher, CEO and co-founder, stated in a statement. Bionaut Laboratories is committed to finding new treatments for these deadly diseases, which have been long overdue for a major breakthrough.

The startup’s namesake magnetically-driven robots are designed to deliver treatments to the midbrain — a more direct application than standard drugs delivered systemically (intravenously, orally, etc.). The company is interested in Huntington’s and Parkinson’s diseases, as well as other debilitating conditions.

This funding round will be used to fund therapies for brain cancers, malignant and aggressive glioma. Dandy Walker Syndrome. The money will also be used for research and development in its technology and to reach the above milestones.

Aviad Maizels, co-founder of PrimeSense (Israel-based 3D visualization firm behind Microsoft Kinect), was once co-owner of Spiegelmacher. Apple acquired this company in 2013 and used it as the basis of its Face ID technology.
