Helm.ai receives $31 million to expand its ‘Unsupervised’ Autonomous Driving Program TechCrunch

Despite macroeconomic headwinds that have almost shut down the venture capital spigot, there are still bright spots in the autonomous car industry.

Helm.ai, an innovative program for the development of driver assistance systems, autonomous drivers, and robots, is just one example.

The Freeman Group recently led a Series B round of $31 million to the Menlo Park, California-based startup. This follows a $26 million venture funding round. This latest round, which included Amplo and strategic investors Honda Motor Co. Goodyear Ventures. and Sungwoo Hitech raised Helm.ai’s valuation up to $431million.

As part of this funding, Brandon Freeman, founder of The Freeman Group has joined the Helm.ai Board of Directors. The company has a fleet of vehicles. It raised $78 millionEven today.

It launched Helm.ai in the same way as other autonomous vehicle startups. This was to bring technology forward with a new approach. The Helm.ai founders Vlad Voroninski and Tudor Achim aimed at software, not sensors or computing.

Helm.ai has created software that can read sensor data and understand human behavior – a goal that is not unlike others in this field. Its approach is what is most noteworthy. To train and improve the “brain” of autonomous vehicles, many vehicle developers rely on a combination o simulation and road testing.

Helm.ai claims it has developed software that can skip all these steps, thereby speeding up schedules and reducing costs. Its low price makes it especially useful for advanced driver assist systems. The six-year-old startup employs an unsupervised learning approach to develop software capable of training neural networks without the need to use extensive fleet data, simulations or demonstrations. Helm.ai’s software is not familiar with any of the sensors or computing devices in the vehicle. This allows Helm.ai the ability to promote the software to a variety customers.

Voroninsky stated that Helm.ai sells its products to Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs in the auto industry to help them “achieve a level of software differentiation with cutting-edge ADAS/L4 solutions.”

“Strategically, we’ve known our go-to-market strategy would focus on high-end ADAS or for several years now; our strategy hasn’t changed at all because of recent events,” he said, referring to consolidation in the AV industry. “I’ve basically predicted for several years now that the vast majority of autonomous driving companies will fail to get to market due to outdated technologies and sub-par business models. That was no surprise to me. The overall autonomous driving market hasn’t been very effective in The past few years because of all the misplaced hype.”

Helm.ai has attracted many clients, but Voroninski stated that he could not name the other clients because of non-disclosure agreements. Helm.ai has previously revealed that Honda is a client. The former chief scientist at cybersecurity startup Sift Security, Helm.ai, said that he has focused on commercializing the technology over the past two decades and securing partnerships.

He stated that the new funding will be used for the addition of 50 employees to the workforce, as well as research and development of business partnerships.
