Amazon has agreed that it will give merchants in the European Union greater access to valuable real property on its website. The European Commission announced Tuesday that the agreement ended antitrust investigations by regulators who claimed Amazon used its size and power in order to suppress competition. In the block

The settlementHe helped Amazon avoid a multibillion-dollar penalty and gave the European Commission (the executive branch of the European Union) a victory in delivering long-awaited reforms to the world’s largest online shopping platform. Under the agreement,Amazon will also be prohibited to use non-public information about independent merchants it collects to inform its product selections.

The deal is designed to increase barriers between Amazon’s digital storefront role that many merchants depend on to reach customers and its role as a manufacturer of products that often compete against third-party vendors. Critics claim that Amazon’s dual roles have created conflicts and allowed it to favor its products over smaller competitors who have few other options to reach customers online.

“Today’s decision sets new rules for how Amazon conducts business in Europe. Amazon can no longer abuse its dual role and will have to change many business practices,” said Margrethe Vestager, executive vice president of the European Commission that oversees digital policy and antitrust enforcement. Customers will also be able to benefit from the competitive advantages of independent retailers or carriers.

Amazon spokesperson said that Amazon was “delighted” to have addressed the concerns of European Commission.

The spokesperson said: “While we continue to disagree with many of the European Commission’s initial conclusions, we have engaged constructively to ensure we continue to serve customers across Europe and support the 225,000 European SMEs selling through our stores.”

Already regarded as the world’s most active regulator for the tech industry, European Union is now more aggressive. Meta was charged by antitrust regulators on Monday with anticompetitive practices in serving the market for the sale and purchase of goods. This could lead to billions in fines. Apple and Google are also being investigated in relation to possible antitrust violations.

New EU laws that are targeted at the tech sector were passed this year and will take effect in 2024. Companies are racing to comply. These rules give regulators greater power to crackdown on what is being deemed illegal. Anti-competitive business practicescompel social media companies monitor user-generated content more closely

Amazon’s Tuesday announcement closely follows the July initial deal. Amazon agreed to:

    • Independent merchants have equal access to “Buy Box” – an area where customers can buy products by clicking on prominent buttons that are located in the product listing. Amazon stated that it will create another display box if there’s enough price difference or delivery time.

    • Amazon can no longer use non-public data about merchants who sell on its site, including terms and sales, revenue, inventory, to make decisions about what products to create, promote, and sell.

    • Third-party sellers can participate in Amazon Prime even if the seller doesn’t use Amazon Logistics. Provided they meet certain standards regarding delivery and service reliability.

The settlement is for five years. It legally applies only to Amazon’s European Union operations.
