TikTok says it’s getting better at detecting ‘borderline’ content

TikTok, as part a wider campaign to increase safety features for younger users, has been working on new ways of age-restricting certain types of content over the past few months. To help identify “mature” content, the app introduced a new rating system called content levels earlier in the year.

The company announced in a blog that it is releasing a new version its “borderline suggestive” model, which it automatically uses to identify sexually explicit, suggestive or borderline content. According to a TikTok spokesperson the new model is more capable to detect “border content,” which is videos that don’t violate the app’s rules. However, it may not be suitable for younger users.

TikTok isn’t the only platform that filters this type of content via recommendations. Instagram has tried for years to filter it out Its recommendations are also included. Automated systems have struggled to detect content that contains mature topics but not explicit nudity. TikTok did not provide details about the accuracy of the new system, but shared that the company had blocked more than 1,000,000 teens from viewing explicit sexually suggestive videos in the past 30 days.

The app also allows content creators to restrict their videos to adult viewers. This feature was previously only available to live videos. However, it will now also be available for short clips.
